Most in-house diesel engine rebuilds take around one to two weeks, though the exact time depends on the engine, how much wear we find once it is stripped, and parts availability. A straightforward rebuild on a common ute or 4WD engine moves faster than a worn heavy-duty unit that needs extra machining. We assess the engine first, give you a realistic timeframe before any work starts, and keep you updated through the strip-down, inspection, machining and reassembly stages. A full diesel engine rebuild starts with stripping the engine right down and thoroughly cleaning and inspecting every component. We measure the block, crank and bores, then machine or recondition what can be saved and replace what cannot, fitting new bearings, rings, gaskets and seals as standard. Depending on condition, that can extend to the cylinder head, valves, pistons, oil pump and timing components. Everything is rebuilt to manufacturer specifications and torqued correctly, then the engine is tested before it goes back in. The goal is simple: a diesel that runs like new and gives you years of reliable service, not a quick patch-up that fails again.

In many cases, yes. A rebuild is usually a fraction of the cost of a brand-new engine or a late-model replacement vehicle, and it lets you keep a vehicle you already know and trust. The first few hundred kilometres matter most. Follow the break-in instructions we give you, because they are tailored to your rebuild and help the new components bed in properly. Keep to gentle, varied driving early on, avoid heavy towing or hard acceleration until the engine is run in, and do not let it labour under load. Get the first oil and filter change done on time, then stick to a regular servicing schedule after that. Use the oil grade we recommend and keep an eye on temperatures and fluid levels. A few signs point to a tired engine that may need rebuilding rather than another patch-up. Watch for heavy blue or white exhaust smoke, climbing oil consumption, a clear loss of power or compression, knocking or rattling from the bottom end, metal in the oil, low oil pressure, or coolant and oil mixing. One of these on its own may be a smaller repair, but several together usually mean internal wear.
